Millions of Filipino Families still live in the dark. Currently, there are about 33% of Filipinos living below the poverty line. With the Philippines having the most expensive electricity in Asia and hundreds of communities that are isolated and are difficult to reach, it would be almost a privilege to have access to this commodity.

Fashion One Foundation teams up with Local Government Units in the Philippines to give “light” to as many communities as possible by providing Solar Lamps to more than a thousand isolated households in the mountain communities of Cebu and Palawan. This would be a start with the aim to provide light to a million homes in the country so that no Filipino family will live in the dark any longer.

“Cebu City’s mountain barangays alone has about 1,000++ isolated households that are difficult to reach. Using these SOLAR lamps will make a huge difference in their lives especially for children struggling with their studies as they read their assignments in the dark” – Philippine Congressman, Tomas Osmeña

Why Solar Lamps?

About 1.3 billion people (International Energy Agency) around the world do not have access to electricity. 20 million of them are from the Philippines. Most of these households use candles or kerosene lamps for their lighting needs. Using kerosene lamp and candles not only strain their eyes and noses but also her pocket. Aside being poor light sources, they are the main causes of house fires.

Kerosene and other forms of fuel-based light also release significant quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere and the inflammatory agents in kerosene have been cited as a cause of everything from cancer to behavioral deficits.

Solution to this problem is to use alternative and renewable source of energy such as solar lamps. Solar-powered LEDs produce light that is 100 times brighter than kerosene-fueled light. This means that on top of having savings on fuel bills, solar lamps provide a safer, brighter, cheaper and more environmentally sustainable form of light. Moreover, the amount of sun the country gets on a daily basis is sufficient to cover its daily requirements making it sustainable.

Fashion Humanitarian Organization, United Colors of Fashion (UCOF), sets a standard for engaging glamour & generosity.

United Colors Of Fashion is a Fashion Philanthropy organization, which aids charities for children living with HIV and AIDS and supports the arts and fashion education in New York. UCOF harnesses the creativity and giftedness of New York’s underprivileged, aspiring artists to help them become successful professionals in the Fashion and Arts industry. It holds an Annual Benefit Gala wherein celebrities, fashion icons, and philanthropist engage in.

With funds generated from this artistic collaboration, UCOF partners with South African aid organizations to provide relief to children with HIV/AIDS, sickle cell anemia and paralysis, who are unable to obtain proper care through normal channels.

This year, Fashion One has the privilege to be one of the Media Sponsors for this themed event, “Be Glamorous: Glamour Gives,” held at the Museum of the City of New York. United Colors of Fashion intricately has selected seven international fashion icons to showcase their Spring 2013 collections that includes Anya Ayoung-Chee, Project Runway season nine winner, Style Butler (Denmark),
Amparo Chorda (Spain), Carla Silva (Angola), Naked Ape (South Africa), Soucha Fashion House (Egypt) and David Tlale, whom was the first designer from South Africa to present on schedule at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this season.

UCOF partnering designers serve as mentors for disadvantaged novices and assists with providing hands on experiences in the industry through our workshops, lectures, and presentations.

United Colors of Fashion is presided by founding partners Ciano Clerjuste as president and Veronica Rovegno as vice president.

Synopsis

Phuong Ly, a poor, beautiful Vietnamese woman, falls in love with an attractive, kind and wealthy man who wants to take her hand in marriage. Her life is seemingly perfect until her boyfriend’s mother purposefully sabotages their relationship.

Heartbroken and fragile, Phuong Ly travels to Ho Chi Minh City to work as a cleaner at a marriage agency. There she meets Mitch, one of the men seeking an arranged marriage.

He takes a strong interest in her, and coerces her to marry him with the promise that he’ll support her family in Vietnam and that she’ll receive a better life. However as soon as she arrives in America, Phuong Ly realizes she has been brought as a slave.

She is violated and abused with no hope of escape. The only ray of light is the bond she develops with the American’s young, autistic niece; both of them prisoners needing to escape.

What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking has been with us since the beginning of time; only its trends have changed over time. Trafficking, also referred to as modern day slavery, is more affordable, more wide-spread, and more ingrained in our society than during the Civil War. Today’s trafficking victims are females, males and children, are from any country, and represent any ethnicity. They work in industries ranging from domestic servitude to agriculture to commercial sex industry. According to Global Financial Integrity, a program for the Center for International Policy, human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, second only to drug trafficking as the most profitable illegal industry.

Just as the nature of the crime is global, the nature of the movement to fight it is also global. Governments, businesses, non-profits and individual communities across the globe are working to eradicate trafficking and help its victims. The Fashion One Foundation stands up against human trafficking and supports the empowerment of victims and promoting awareness for the widespread cause.

The Fashion One Foundation believes that slavery today takes on a new form. Daily men, women, and children are coerced, abducted, and forced against their will; ultimately forced into virtually invisible bondage. According to the UN Global Initiative to fight Human Trafficking, approximations of 2.5 million people are affected by the crime of human trafficking. It is the sad truth that this unmentionable act invades multiple populations throughout our world. Human Exploitation functions as our modern form of slavery that has taken residence deep within our society, infecting our local communities.

Sex Trafficking: Facts & Figures

– The United Nations estimates that 700,000 to 4 million women and children are trafficked around the world for purposes of forced prostitution, labor and other forms of exploitation every year. Trafficking is estimated to be a $7 billion dollar annual business.

– Victims of trafficking are subject to gross human rights violations including, rape, torture, forced abortions, starvation, and threats of torturing or murdering family members.

– Nearly every country is involved in the web of trafficking activities, either as a country of origin, destination
